Overview

For our first IXD102 project, we've been tasked to complete a type screen on one of the following typefaces:

The type screen needs to include a brief summary of the creator of the typeface and a graphic created using the chosen typeface.

Futura

Futura is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Paul Renner and released in 1927. It was designed as a contribution on the New Frankfurt-project (an affordable modernist housing project). Futura is based on geometric shapes, especially the circle, inspired by the Bauhaus design style of the period. It was developed as a typeface by the Bauer Type Foundry, in competition with Ludwig & Mayer's seminal Erbar typeface of 1926.

The Futura font is still one of the most important typefaces being used to this day and was marketed as “die Schrift unserer Zeit,” or in English, “the font of our time” by the Bauer type foundry.

The font uses basic geometric forms and even-width strokes that eliminate any type of contrast. Lowercase letters like the ‘a’ are the exception when it comes to the even width. Ascenders and descenders in the lowercase letters are tall and go over the height of uppercase characters. This gives the font an elegant look and sets it apart from other geometric fonts. Because of this, the font needs more line spacing when in a paragraph of text.

Futura is part of a group of fonts that work well both as body copy and display. Futura has been used in many different industries, including film posters, advertising and album covers. The Futura font is used in many ads and logos, including Ikea (pre 2010), Absolut Vodka, Domino's Pizza, Nike, and Volkswagen. Movies that have used the font include: V for Vendetta, American Beauty, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Gravity. Wes Anderson also uses the font in many of his films.
